The Yaesu FT-902DM HF transceiver is something that will also stand out in history, as at one time (in the
70s) it was one of the company's top of the line, flagship models. This one in particular was one
of their better made and most beautiful looking "hybrid" models made by the company back in the
1970s. Many of them still work well to this day! For those unfamiliar with the "hybrid" term in regards
to Amateur Radio, this refers to a solid state transistor and tube final design. It used all solid
state components, except for the final PA stages, which used tubes (the 12BY7 popular driver tube into
6146 finals). Something that stood out in its times, was the continuously passband tuning feature (which
wasn't so common back then with ham radios). Although similar in design to the 901DM model, this one
has an improved design over it (less drift issues and better receiver front end).
The Yaesu FT-902DM covered 10 through 160 meters and worked well in all modes (including AM, FM, SSB, and
CW). Not as common as the FT-101s, however sometimes the CB operators would sneak 11 meter crystals in them
and use them on the Chicken Band due to their acclaimed AM modulation.
